This shot reminds me of the scene in "Apocalypse Now" when the soldiers land in the war-zone on the coast of Vietnam. The sergeant is more concerned with the a-frame wave going both ways so "one guy can go right while the other goes left" than he is with the battle going on behind him. The interesting thing is I don't doubt a surfer in a war zone on the beach would stop for to look at the waves and become completely removed from the terrible situation he is in.
